The Magdalene Laundries

This section of our site is dedicated to the Magdalenes — women and girls falsely imprisoned and forced to work as slaves (for what else is forced, unpaid labour) in industrial laundries, to the profit of various religious orders. The scandal of their treatment is NOT something that can be excused by the usual mantra, "Those were different times." The last Magdalene Laundry only closed as doors as recently as 1996.

The nuns continued to profit from the Magdalenes even in death, as these pages reveal. AdoptionIreland: the Adopted People's Association is calling for a State inquiry into:

  • The unexplained deaths of many Magdalene women and girls
  • The circumstances surrounding their deaths
  • The circumstances surrounding their illegal burial without notification to the proper authorities
  • The circumstances surrounding their subsequent disinterral, cremation and reburial, including the issue of documents permitting this by the Department of the Environment, despite the fact that an additional and unaccounted for 22 bodies were found
In addition, we call for:
  • The real names of the victims of the Magdalene Laundry system to be released
  • Criminal prosecution of those responsible where laws are found to have been broken
  • Payment of compensation to the survivors.
